The Mid-Autumn Festival holds significant cultural importance, symbolising warmth and bliss as it marks the day when the moon is believed to be the brightest and fullest. This year, KDF joyously celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival with The Serangoon CC on September 30, 2023, commemorating the 5th Anniversary of the Sing For Charity concert.
The event, graced by Ms. Chan Hui Yuh, Adviser to Aljunied GRC Grassroots Organisations, featured immensely talented members of the Serangoon community taking the stage to perform renditions of famous songs, earning thunderous applause from the audience. As evening descended, the concert was hosted by Getai veterans Liu Ling Ling and Wang Lei, who not only entertained with their humorous outfits and comedic remarks but also charmed the crowd with a rendition of the popular Hokkien song "烘炉茶古."
The event's stellar lineup included renowned singers such as Ms Feng Gao Mei, Mr Lennerd Lim, Ms Esther Ng, Mr Xie Sheng Zhi, Mr Zhuang Qing Yu, and Ms Zhu Li Li. It also featured a heartwarming segment where KDF patient Mr Siew Kum Hoong and his wife shared the challenges of kidney disease, highlighting how his wife was his main pillar of support throughout his dialysis journey. Mr. Siew and his wife also serenaded the audience with a lovely rendition of "情诗写在彩云上" to raise funds for KDF patients. Friends from the Serangoon CC Indian Activity Executive Committee (IAEC) and Malay Activity Executive Committee (MAEC) added excitement to the evening. As part of the fundraising efforts, garlands were available from $20 each, allowing the audience to support their favourite singers while contributing to the cause.
Beyond the enchanting melodies, a mid-autumn carnival unfolded with engaging activities. KDF organized games, including using a Nerf gun to shoot down miniature cardboard boxes disguised as sugar cubes and a creative version of beer pong. Participants aimed to bounce ping pong balls into cups filled with water while avoiding cups containing marbles representing sugary bubble tea. Prizes, including a KDF tissue packet, were awarded to participants accumulating a certain number of points. These games aimed to raise awareness about diabetes, a primary health issue tied to kidney disease. To promote health awareness, a health screening station was set up to provide members of the public with free checkups.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all donors as well as Serangoon CC, for their steadfast support towards this event, which proved immensely successful, raising over $200,000 in support of KDF's cause towards helping needy kidney patients.
